July 6, 2025 - United States vs. Mexico (Concacaf Gold Cup FINAL)
Cowboy Misfits! 🤠 It was all systems go for our first visit to Houston, Texas, as we took in the latest chapter of the United States/Mexico rivalry. Out of 18 all-time Gold Cup Finals, the neighbors and rivals faced off for the eighth time in Concacaf’s showpiece event. A sellout crowd of 70,925 packed NRG Stadium for Houston’s first major football final, a precursor to the venue hosting seven matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
As for the match itself, it unfolded much like the last USMNT game we attended nearly a month ago—with the red, white, and blue striking early. Chris Richards opened the scoring with a perfectly-placed header off a Sebastian Berhalter free kick. However, that early moment proved to be the high point for the U.S., as Mexico soon took control of the match.
Raúl Jiménez equalized in the 27th minute, honoring his late former Wolves teammate Diogo Jota, who had passed away just three days prior. After the break, tournament captain and eventual Best Player of the Tournament Edson Álvarez netted the match-winner, heading in a set-piece flicked on by Johan Vásquez in the 77th minute.
With the 2–1 victory, Mexico captured their 10th Gold Cup title. Between them and the United States, the two rivals have claimed 17 of the tournament’s 18 editions—Canada being the lone exception with their 2000 triumph. For El Tri, the win also marks their 13th continental championship, including three titles from the predecessor Concacaf Championship.
