November 10, 2024 - Gotham FC vs. Portland Thorns (NWSL Quarterfinal)
In their first home playoff match in club history at Red Bull Arena, Gotham FC advanced to the NWSL semifinals following a tense 2–1 victory over the Portland Thorns in front of a record-setting crowd of 15,540. The defending NWSL champions controlled much of the action, keeping Portland off the scoreboard in the first half and dictating the tempo throughout. However, Gotham was also unable to find the back of the net as the opening 45 minutes ended scoreless.
The deadlock persisted into the second half until the 67th minute, when Tierna Davidson volleyed home a Rose Lavelle free-kick that had floated across the box. The Thorns responded in the 75th minute through a Reilyn Turner header from a set-piece, leveling the score at 1–1. The match looked destined for extra time until Rose Lavelle, involving minutes earlier in the buildup, struck in the seventh minute of stoppage time, slotting the winner past Portland keeper Shelby Hogan and sending the Bats into the semis.
The late strike maintained Gotham’s hopes of defending their title, setting up a semifinal clash with Washington Spirit in the nation’s capital. However, Gotham's run came to an end there, falling in a penalty shootout as Washington advanced to the 2024 NWSL Final in Kansas City, where they were ultimately defeated by the Orlando Pride.
